Information on the Differences Between Screen Printed and Digital Printed T-shirts

Print your CD Cover On A T-shirt - Award Winning Blues Artist - Kenny "Blues Boss" Wayne www.kennybluesboss.comDigital Printing

The process of digital printing is achieved by designing completely on a computer using digital photographs, artwork etc. and then printing the completed image to transfer paper. The next step is to lay the image on the T-shirt on the heat press and press for 15 - 20 seconds (varies with brands of transfer paper).

Unlike screening, each T-shirt requires a separate sheet of transfer paper, so you are not just using ink, but you are using transfer paper as well. The paper is not reusable. This is why the cost of this method is more expensive than screening. However, the front end cost is non-existent. There are no colour separations required and no screens to make. This makes it very cost effective for smaller runs since there are no other variables such as the making of the screens to push up the per-unit price of the T-shirt. It also may be the only viable way to go for multi-colour or full colour printing.

Strengths:

Digital Printing is cost effective for printing smaller quantities or T-shirts that require full colour printing. You should never pay "by the colour."

Various effective methods of printing to transfer paper include, colour laser printers, dry ink printers, dye-sublimation printers and inkjet printers. Also, the image could be printed onto a plain piece of paper and then reproduced using a colour laser copier filled with transfer paper. Several of these methods are available to most people.

With some transfer papers, pre-treating the T-shirt with a spay is required. Other times a "Teflon" coated paper is required. Other papers are single step transfers. Quality T-shirt printers will follow the manufacturer's guidelines and will only use the recommended ink, transfer paper and methods.

Use graphic art to advertise your products. Learn how to play guitar chords and strumming rhythms "The Easiest Way!" www.EasiestWayGuitar.comWhen a commercial heat press is used in conjunction with the T-shirt transfer paper and if all of the recommended procedures are followed, excellent results are achieved. All of the ink is transferred from the paper to the T-shirt without any scorching of the T-shirt. The results are T-shirts that not only look great but are also very durable and resistant to fading in the wash.

Drawbacks:

Some transfer paper when pressed leaves the printed image feeling to the touch somewhat like heavy paper. This is more apparent with some of the inkjet transfer papers. Also, due to the increased cost that is added from using a separate piece of transfer paper for each T-shirt, the per unit price on large runs may be cost prohibitive. Probably the biggest drawback is the inability to print black and other dark coloured T-shirts. Apparently though, white ink is in it's final stages of testing, so in the very near future the ability to properly print on darks will be available.

Back to the screen process          Next. How to decide.
